Thanks for all the good advice. I got the xfer case off the jeep and on the bench today. I'm well on the way to having it ready to replace gaskets and seals. Just one thing stands in the way - the emergency brake companion flange and drum.

I got the shaft nut off but the thing won't budge. The service manual is no help and the Jeep Rebuilders Manual says use an air hammer if the flange does not come off easily.

before I go buy or rent an air hammer - does anyone have any suggestions to get the flange and drum off the shaft?

Assuming a D18, I used a $5 two legged pulley puller, the drum came right off. The flange has 4 3/8 bolts in it behind the drum. Take a photo of the pad assemble so you can put it back the way it sits, take some head scratching with out the photo.

Thanks. I tried a two legged puller with no result. It just got tight and the thing would not budge.

Perhaps this will help. Piece of scrap angle iron. Drilled to fit over 2 of the yoke studs and tapped in the center to run a 1/2" bolt through and against the shaft. Squirted it right off.

And x2 on the photos of the ebrake guts. Definately get a few shots of that before taking it apart....

Guess my Xfer case was leaking out the back, eh? R)

Agree - just using language from the service manual (page 269).

I pulled one yesterday with a slide hammer puller from HF.
    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=5223

Used the two puller piece option around the old yoke and a couple nuts on loose.

    Came right off.

Attempting to do the same on the front but it is not budging and the T/C is moving all over the place on the bench.

You will most likely experience a leak at the rear yoke area unless you put a good bead of permatex sealer on the rear shaft before you put that yoke back on. Also put a bead on after the yoke and before the big washer, nut, and cotter pin.

The oil seeps through in the splines.

Spooky, thinking this is a last ditch effort kinda brake. The handle might as well say "JUMP, you fool!"

using that ratchet handle to stop when the hydraulic brakes aren't working will definately create an emergency. Maybe that's why they call it that.
