...ok it was verified by several on the board that the longer of the 2 brake pads on a 1970 jeep cj-5(dana 44) go towards the rear of the vehicle. However, when i look at the factory shop manual it shows the short shoe on the rear of the vehicle and the long shoe towards the front. I can verify this in figure p-10 of the Kaiser/AMC shop manualwhere it shows the long pad on the same side as the lever plate, linkage rods, and adjustment lever. When i pulled the drums off the Jeep, the long was indeed towards the rear, but I am wondering if this service was provided by someone thinking that the common practice of long shoe in the back should be applied to this vehicle. I promise this is the last time i will ask....but what is correct? Is the shop manual misleading? Does it matter? I really want to install these pads correctly as I want to take this Jeep on a long tip and it needs to be reliable. Thanks again guys!

the pic you refer to, P-10, shows the self adjuster mechanism.
they always go to the rear, as does the star adjuster wheel.
with that being said, then the long shoe goes to the rear as pictured.
P-10 would be a view of the left front wheel brake assy.

than you for your response. However, on my jeep if i put the star adjuster wheel to the back of the vehicle, it would not be aligned wit hthe hole on the backing plate. does this make sense.

I would say that the backing plates have been installed incorrectly, left vs right. A previous owner may have done this. The adjusting hole should be to the rear, the short shoe to the front, and the long shoe to the rear, with self adjust linkage installed on the rear shoe as well.

ok here are some pictures. I promise that the bacing plates have never been off. This jeep was purchased new for my uncles dealership in 1970 and only has 32,000 original miles on it. this is only it's second brake job. Whatever direction the backing plate is mounted was done in Toledo. Please let me know if this looks correctly. Thanks again!

I'd chime in, but this has rapidly gotten over my head. Anyone have an answer?

maybe someone else with a D44 flanged 10" brake rod adjusters can expand on the subject ?
out of curiousity, what hand parking brake do you have ?
at the rear wheels or transmission ?

he's still going to have the transfer mounted emergrency brake. i've taken these things apart, but it's been a while since then. i do, however know that i put the large shoe towards the back when they went back in. if it didn't go back that way i would have spent the day scratching my head. as for the adjusters, they should be able to go back in either way (the hole in the large shoe should hold the linkage) but i do remember having a little fun with the self adjusters due to some misplacing of that nifty sleigh looking thing. basically, you're limited by the holes in the backing plates. they will detemine wich way the adjusters need to go. then the direction of the self adjusters will be determined from where the "star" end lies, and finally the linkage will fall in place. but make sure the larger shoe is in the back. that's basically the only given in brakes i've learned about the cj's...
