When I took Tonk's back axle apart (10 spline two piece tapered) I only found a bearing retainer on one side (with the shims). Actually this suprised me as for some reason I thought these axles don't use'em at all, just depending on the brake backing plate to hold things in. In fact the retainer had a definate "home made" look to it:rofl:

So, do these axles actually use the retainer plates?

If so should there be one on each end or only on the shim end?

    Thanks,

    H.

should be 2 retainers, 1 on each side, behind the backing plate.
most shim off one side only; I have seen shims on both sides.
The order in which I always assembled:
axle housing, shim(s), retainer, backing plate, gasket, outer seal, gasket, protector cup.
of course, this will be open to debate, like so many things....
