Well, i got the samurai, and pretty much i cant leave it alone. Things are swurling in my head. Mainly making it a deisel. I know i have no cash now to think about it, but i can dream. And then today i got to talking to the owner of the auto shop that works on the station vehicles and we got to talknig bout deisels and bio-deisel. He knows a few people in Costa Rica that are using Biodeisel and such. So this is just making me go batting thinknig bout a motor to use. The main diesle swapped into the Sammi is the VW NA or TDI, but they just seem so rare to get. I do have a buddy who says he can probably find one in a yard by him :( ;)

Then the mechanic mentions the Ford Deisel used in Tempos (and i believe the same motor in Brians old escort) he knows a guy who had one and he doesnt use it much anymore. So i am wondering if anyone knows about this ford motor? It is a mazda maide motor, just wodnering if it is worth possibly persuing? I know i will need to find a way to mate it to the sammi tranny.

Given this is all up in the air, but it is so cool

And then yesterday i got to looknig at the deisel motor in a 4x4 forklift we have at the transmitter site for construction. It is the cummins 4 BTC and boy is that such a cool motor, and so small. The hardest thing is finding these motors. Just wish they were places i can get one :(

So i guess this is not much of a question, jsut Fab Dreaming :)

... and maybe a little of the crack pipe. :)

Would the temp/escort diesel be transverse mounted? What aboout checking into an older Mercedes? At least it would be rear wheel drive. Not sure about size though.

Chevette diesel was a posibilty when I had one a few years back. I think it's a Isuzu. Used to be info about it on the web. Used Chevette tranny IIRC. Probably find one real cheap.

yea, the tempo/escort engine was Mazda made. Transaxle, front wheel drive motor. They did put the engine in rangers too. I'd assume the accessories where different because of the rear wheel drive. 87 and up motors had the best heads on them i've been told.

Sorry if I just filled yer crack pipe dan;)

I'm really happy with the 3.9 Isuzu diesel I have in my 5. It works really nice off road (I haven't had much chance to drive it on the street). I just got back to working on it and plan to use it alot more this year. Really torquey and hard to stall it offroad, it just keeps lugging (even with 3.07 gears and 37" tires).

...holding my breath while adding to the crack pipe.............

Why not a VW TDI? There's conversion kits for the Trackers so I'd think that the Sami's would benefit from the same support?

I'll e-mail you a few pics which your more then welcome to post. I used an SM 420 and D-300 case. I custom made the frame side motor mounts and reused the ones on the motor. One nice thing to remember with the Sami is that the case is devorced, so (as I'm sure it was hinted at) you can use pretty much any RWD tranny. I got really lucky with my conversion as I found a Chevy G10 van with it already in. Whatever motor you decide to run try to get the whole vehicle and don't dump it till your done with the swap (I made that mistake and had to source parts).

I sent a couple of teasers to Dan. I will take some of the finished engine compartment to night (never did it once I was done). You will have to excuse the non show truck appearance, function before fancy.
