per the factory parts manual, here are the code tables for 1971 and prior
    variations can/do exist
notice no codes for 1967/1969/1971; most likely they have 1968/1970 trim codes
the trim code number is stamped into the metal plate which should be attached to the drivers side firewall, under the hood.
The number should be a 3 digit number: 248, 329, 418 etc. The "T" only appears in the code in the parts manual.

    Trim Code Info for 1962 and prior CJ5, CJ6, CJ3B, DJ3A

here are some different codes from an early 1960s parts manual
this was before the 3 digit system
these include DJ3A, Surrey, and CJ3B models as well as CJ5, CJ6
does anyone know if these are on a metal tag as well ?
    location ?

I would say it was a factory fleet order of some type: GSA, Forest Service, Border Patrol, CSD, etc.
Most of those orders didn't go thru a dealer except for the agency to take delivery of the Jeeps.( Some larger dealers may have had fleet depts back then)
the dealer would do a "courtesy delivery" for the factory: wash, clean, pre-delivery servicing of the Jeeps.
all of the Jeeps would have had an order number, whether a dealer ordering for stock or taking a customer special order.

Thanks Jim. I had not seen those code charts. Unfortunately my CJ-5 does not have the trim code plate still on the firewall. But this is a good start. I think I can use the chart plus some pics I have collected over several months to get this job done correctly. You get the cigar. Many thanks. R)

jpflat2a - Thanks for posting the trim code chart. I always wondered what the trim code 201was on my 65 3B! Now I learn it is "Amber Met. Vinyl"? Does anyone know what this looks like? I am about to recover my seats and I would like to go back to the original color.

    Thanks for any help
