Seems like a silly question but on the rear driveshaft does the short piece of the driveshaft go at the transfer case end or at the diff? Does it matter?

If I have my terminology correct, it would be the diff.

Thanks, I guess that it's not a slip yoke.

Both slip yokes go towards the T/C. That's what the books show. Personally, I think that is a poor design, but oh well.

The slip end has a small hole in the end of the shaft, which I assume is to allow any water that gets in there to drain out (may also act as a vent during compression/extension-not sure). It may not be right, but I really don't want water sitting in there all the time, and I don't see any other way for it to get out.

The slip goes toward the T/C end generally. It probably doesn't matter a whole lot, but it might wear faster placed at the bottom (toward the diff) as the weight of the shaft will be riding on the splines.

I must have my terminology wrong.

I think that I have learned that it is called a slip joint on the driveshaft. The slip yoke is part of the the transfer case. The slip yoke is used with a solid driveshaft.
