New pilot bushing/bearing? Mine was pretty snug as well due to the new pilot bearing fitting snug on the input shaft.

    What scott said.

My timken bearing was snug enough that it was binding the first few hundred miles. Made it engage slightly in neutral.

How did you know it was binding? Noise?

Thanks guys, I got it in...

Let me tell you that tranny install was ALLOT of work. I had the motor hanging on the lift w/ trans/tcase on a POS HF tranny jack. Stupid thing kept falling of the jack and I had to muscle it back on at the same time trying to scoot the tranny shaft into the bell housing.

Never again, not in this lifetime.

Sorry, I was brain-dead earlier. It did NOT engage in NEUTRAL.

It would slightly move when IN GEAR, but with the clutch pedal pushed in. I thought it was my clutch linkage and basically completely rebuilt my linkage, but the problem continued for about 2 more weeks until the pilot bearing/input shaft loosened up a bit.

Another member had a similar problem I found out after searching the forum pretty heavily.

If your drivetrain was out of the JEEP you should consider yourself lucky. Try doing it by yourself under a JEEP with a crappy jack. Never again is correct!

    Harry,
Make sure there's no paint around the input shaft flange or the bell housing. Just muscled mine in last week or so ago and I neglected to clean it off and ran into the same problem. After it was clean it popped right in.:v6:

Rocky- You hit this one on the head. :smash: :smash: :smash:

I did paint the bellhousing, of course using Por15. I wrestled w/ the stupid thing for about 3 hours. I finally disconted the BH from the tranny and tried just getting the bh on. Well, you guess it, I found out that Por15 on the bell housing spuds was keeping it from going togther. Allot easier moving the bh by itself than with the extra 100 pounds of tranny attached.

Live and learn applies strongly here.:D
