clutch cover bolts

i broke a bolt as i was installing the clutch cover (pressure plate).are the bolts that hold the clutch cover to the flywheel special? the old ones are 5/16 18 but have a 1/4 inch shoulder or shank with no threads just below the head. i have grade 8 bolts the same size and thread but the threads go all the way to the head. will these work or are the shouldered one preferred?

 

Should have the shoulder on it.

 

You may have to hit a few of the better auto places like NAPA or some machine shops. Also you probably will have a place that specializes in fasteners somewhere in California. If you strike out there, and you have an aviation supply nearby (weird, I know...) ask about MS grade bolts. These come with the correct length of threads and shoulders. The ones you need I believe are MS20074-05-06. (MilSpec 20074, 5/16"x18, .781" long, .250" shoulder.)

 

I almost put it together w/the grd 8s last night (patience is not one of my strong points) i'll track the shouldered ones down and thanks for "protecting me from my own stupidity"
