Saturday I finally had a couple hours to work on the CJ.

I started it, it still had the miss. Cleaned and checked the right bank plug wires, all OK. Put the timing light on each plug wire on the right bank, all firing correctly, but still missing. Drained a pint of oil, added a pint of MMO, drove it out onto the driveway. Left it idle for ~10 minutes, still missing, loading in the exhaust and popping off occasionally, but still maintaining a rough idle. Then it stumbled, almost stopped, but caught again and back to the rough idle. I got in, tached it up to about 2K and held it. It ran smooth at 2 K but one cylinder still wasn't firing right, still popping from the right exhaust, black smoke with the popping/backfires in the muffler. I kept feathering the throttle, feeling the response and hesitation.
I finally just punched it down, tached it up to just over 4K  lots of popping and black smoke... did that 5 or 6 times, then noticed it got better... :D The black smoke stopped, the popping stopped. The response was smoother... still a bit of hesitation when I dump the pedal, but now it was just hesitation, not a cough or backfire. I took it for a drive around the "block", about a 2 mile square that I run for tests, one section is a long straight farm road, I can run 2nd (3rd) gear out to almost 4K before I have to back off... it ran pretty good, I really hammered it. Brought it home, shut it down. Started it 20 minutes later, it was still OK, I think the hesitation was gone (the only time I noticed it was when my foot slipped off the accelerator ;)

So, I think it was probably a carbon build up from starting the Jeep a dozen times to move it into/out of the garage, to wash it, etc... and never allowing it to warm up. Maybe some carbon blocked the exhaust valve from closing completely. It seems like the couple 4K blasts blew it out ! The other thought is maybe the MMO I put in loosened a sticky lifter...

Either way, it seems to be running OK now.
I was worried it wouldn't be running right for the PA Jeeps show coming up in 2 weeks... I'd hate to have to drive my truck to the show... :D

Mine has been sputtering some lately too. I went through and did cap, plugs, condenser. The points and rotor I had to order and aren't in until tommorrow so hopefully that will cure the missing. I need to blow it out too. I have done a lot of start and moves lately. I may run some Sea Foam through it once I get everything replaced and buttoned up.
