Hello again folks! I'm getting some free time and a little extra money set aside to get the old Willys going. It's a 1953 M38A1 I bought from a local Fire Department. It's pretty stock and still sports the original 24 Volt electrical system with 24V generator, etc.... The jeep runs and drives but is having some wiring problems with the headlamps and taillamps.

I'm considering switching to a 12 Volt system. Does anyone have any advice on weather I should convert? What are the advantages/disadvantages of converting? Is it worth the money, time, etc or should I stick with the 24Volt system? Any ideas on how much this may cost? Your opinions and advice are appreciated. Keep the shiny side up!

It's really up to you. The ones I end up with I usually convert to 12 volt, that's usually because the origional harness is usually really butchered. Just save everything there's a market for it or you can pass it along with your Jeep if you sell it. If your want it all origional your gonna want to repair it.

Search the archives on this site - it's a frequent topic.

Personally, if it's in good condition, I like the military 24 volt set up - it is super high quality, and totally waterproof too. Parts are available.

Changing the voltage does not solve the wiring problems. 6 volt is better than 12 volt and 24 volt is better than 12 volt.
It all depends on you are comfortable with. I converted my M38A1 to 12 volt with alternator and like it. If you starting fron scratch with the wiring then, yes, is is simpler. Cheaper too. M38A1 wiring harness is around $500.00 these days. If you used the new harness all the wires are marked with numbers so installing it is simple. Good luck.

I hope you enjoy your project.
