29 for 26 tooth D18 Swap

    Hello all,

    I'm looking at swapping transfer cases in my '57 CJ5 and '53 M38A1. They are both Spicer 18's. The CJ has the 29 tooth drive gear and the M38A1 has the 26 tooth drive gear. I'm keeping the M38A1 and just want to know if there is any advantage to one T/C over the other. Also, is the swap a simple bolt on or is there anything special I need to do.

    The reason I'm considering the swap is that I have a Warn OD with 29 teeth and want it for the M38A1. So it's either swap T/C's or find the 26 tooth gear for my OD. As always, I'd love some input!

    Moderator's note: You mean D18, a T18 is a 4 speed transmission, common mistake. Thread has been edited to be accurate.

    HE HE - Well if I can not swap the OD like we PMed - I have both Tcases sitting in the garage. Guess that might be an option - though shipping would cost a pretty penny :)

    FWIW - I have found no real difference between the 2 Tcases and I run a mix of them on the various riggs. The only one with a Diff is the adaptability of those with a 4" hole.
