Can someone tell me how to replace the pinion seal and get the preload right without tearing it all apart?

You don't have to worry about the preload. Take off the big nut holding the yoke on, pull the yoke off, replace the seal and reassemble. It's that easy.

Great! I was wondering because I mentioned on another site once about removing the rear yoke and I almost got jumped about not setting the preload correctly when I reinstalled it. I just stuck it back on like it was before. I didn't know it made any difference.

As long as you didn't take any shims out or move anything around, the preload will stay the same.

What kind of differential is it? If its something like an AMC20 rear then you do need to be more careful when tightening the pinion nut back down.
