    What book should I get to cover the 74 cj and 401? Am I correct in that the 401 was not offered in a cj?

    for the Jeep, you can't beat the factory service manual
    no, the 401 never came from the factory in CJ models

    the factory Jeep service manual for 1974 covers all Jeep models and engines and transmissions and transfer cases etc etc etc etc

    factory metal tag on the valve cover, pass side I believe; always missing on the majority of engines.
    in Jeep applications, the 401 was used between 1974-1977, with some 49 state 78s also I believe
    anyway, all 401s should be the same
