Was curious what year windshield I can put on my 74 to fit a later model hard top on. How much of a difference will this make in what soft top I get. I havn't decided yet. I might just go with a soft top instead.

How much later hard top? I think the main difference will be in the doors when you change windshields.

I don't have any doors, so I guess whatever would work with the windshield. I want wipers on the bottom, and would prefer the motor on the inside.

Right now the 73 my dad has has a 79 windshield on it to work with the soft top I gave him. The doors don't line up right (yet), but all the rest was pretty simple.

So if I bought a soft top with soft doors and windshield for a post 75, it should work on a 74 tub?

Do we actually know someone who's using a top and doors from a post '75 jeep on a pre '76 jeep? Reason I'm asking is because when I had old Nixon there was a guy who offered to give me his old soft doors. I held them in place over the openings on Nixon and it wasn't even close. Didn't have a later w/s of course, but still from what I remember the fit just wasn't even close.

Like I said earlier,my dad's is a 73 tub/79 top and windshield frame. The doors don't fit right, but we are working on trying to figure out how to make them work.

    :raises hand:

It's a fiberglass tub but for a '55-'75 CJ-5 with a '76+ WS Frame. Does that not count since it's fiberglass?

Fits great. The difference is the WS angle. Now making the WS hold downs work with the dash is another matter entirely.

Well, is there something different about the fiberglass tubs? I'm serious. I don't know. I can't see any difference between Linus and Eugene as far as tub dimensions. The WS frames have different angles (door) and widths at the top (top). Beyond that I don't know of any differences.

I would have to think that the tubs would be the same, and the windshield angle seems to be the main problem gettin my doors to fit. Did you have to change the angle or something?

No, because the top/doors/ and WS all are post '76 equipment. Dash is too for the time being.

To be fair, if you looked RIGHT when I posted it, that wasn't there. I looked at it, decided it didn't sound right and lacked explanation. I updated it a few minutes ago.

Well thank you. I thought I read through it but I sure didn't see that part. It better explains it. How difficult is it to find a hard top for a post 75 cj5?

Let me edit this, cuz I'm fixing to get hit with the WTB brick. I mean are there many of them around?

They're around, most are fiberglass. Not as common as a metal hard top for a pre-'76 though.

Well then maybe I should go with an older metal top and older windshield frame. I sure wouldn't mind having a hard top, but if I'm gonna spend $700-$800 on a top I'd rather it be in really good shape, either soft top or hard top. I know they're louder, but do the soft tops tend to leak more than the hard tops?

No. I prefer a soft top, well, to a metal top. I wouldn't mind a good fiberglass top. Even at that the Jeep just handles better with a soft top IMO.
