To recap...I had narrowed down my intermittent miss/shutting down to either carb or electrical. I replaced the cap and rotor and coil, got a carb rebuild kit, and ordered a new Pertronix.... figuring if I throw enough parts at it something will fix it... :D

I was on travel all last week... got to see TallyJeeper (John) again, and met GoDevil (Donnie)... drank ALOT of Pepsi at Applebees!
'64, from Aiken "Panzered" on us... ;) :) Hopefully we'll hook up next time...

Anyway I got home Friday, Saturday I installed the new Pertronix. certain that would be the fix... put it in, the CJ fired right up!! I left it idle for a bit, tached it up some and was satisfied... rolled it down the driveway to the road. Left it idle for another 10 minutes and decided to take her out. Hit the gas.... and it died.
It wouldn't start again, tried many times.

OK, so it must be tha carb. Pulled the carb off... boy alot of rust in that cavity between the base plate and the manifold, had to vacuum it!
Rebuilt the carb on Saturday afternoon, blew out all of the passages after soaking in Berrynan's Chem-Dip for a couple hours
(It takes DAYS of handwashing to get the smell of that stuff off your hands!!!), then covered up the project for the night... it started raining late in the afternoon and the Jeep was in the street.

Sunday after church I put the remaining parts on the carb, carried it out to the CJ, bolted it all back together, and tried to start it.
Nada. Didn't even try. I watched the fuel pump move fuel through the glass filter, I made sure the bowl filled and the accel pump was squirting.... I eventually flooded it, then wore down the battery.
I yanked tha battery and put it on charge for a couple hours.
Went back, tried it again. Nada.
My neighbor came over, he's new to the Jeep thing, just got a '97 TJ 4 banger 6 weeks ago. He came over and was watching, asking questions...

After about 10 minutes he asked if I checked the fuses. I said it's not the fuses, it was running yesterday... but I thought I'd check the 30A coil fuse anyway, because it just felt like no spark (hadn't confirmed that yet)... pulled the fuse and it was toast!!
Slapped in another one, that rig fired right up! It coughed and sputtered a bit from the flooding, but then it smoothed out.
I guess I blew the fuse trying to restart it on Saturday

So the problem was definitely the carb. (now I have a spare Pertronix, spare cap, rotor and coil ;) )

I reset the carb exactly where it was before. The idle is lower now, right about 600... must have had a vac leak around the base; the mainfold gasket was pretty well shot.

So all seems pretty good now, just need to fine tune the carb, but it is driveable right now with no hesitation or backfiring. I'll give that a shot later this week or next week.

Thanks to all who offered their suggestions!
It's great to have a running ECJ5 again..

    Darkside?? Who me??

    R)

Big test for the CJ in about half an hour... gotta run across town (10+ miles), pick up a baseboard thermostat before they close at 5:00...
The only test for the CJ so far was around the block, about 2/10 of a mile...
Sure I could take the truck and be safe....

Instead I'll drive the CJ with my fingers crossed...... :D

Good luck on the journey! And sorry again about not making it. I showed up at Appleby's late and didn't see any Jeeps, so I figured you guys might have already left. Next time I will be on time and the first round is on me. :)

Glad you got it going Lynn do you still have the box that your new Pertronix came in could you give the part number by chance am going to buy one for a buddy of mine it would be greatly appreciated.R)
We have been having a horrible problem with the motor wanting to pop at the upper rpm like it is lean when I know it is not so I am going to put in the stock ignition and take out the HEI and see if makes a difference.
If you could and if you still have the number handy all I can say is thankyou.
