I am still trying to find the source of the suspicious clunks coming from my drivetrain and with no garage to work in I am trying to narrow the target down a little...

Has anyone here with an overdrive ever suffered the dreaded drive gear clip failure??

    what were the symptoms?
    what was the damage?

not personally, but I know of several
all had symptoms of popping out of/not staying in gear
it allows the trans mainshaft to move/have too much end play
the OD clip can be diificult to extract when the nut is exerting pressure against it
when no overdrive is involved, have seen the gear, nut, washer fall off
I haven't seen any major damage in any of the ones I've seen

Are you talking about the locking clip? If so, that was what I was saying before, that it would intermittently make the symptom you described, although most of the time it would just pop clear and wind the motor. If that is the case, Herm sent me all the goodies to fix it for about $40 with shipping, IIRC.

yeah that's what I'm thinking. what happens is when I accelerate it is ok, when I let off to shift, it clunks several times until I stop moving. if I just let out the clutch and idle around It gives some funny vibrations but doesn't clunk.

if this has been already performed, disregard.
I think I would drain the units, remove the top cover from the trans, and look inside for broken teeth, debris etc; poke around, see if anything moves around that's not supposed to.
Same thing with the t/case; remove the bottom cover, poke/pry around on the OD gear and int gear; see if anything obvious screams out at you.
hopefully, you'll discover something before moving on
    anyway, my o.2 worth
