I run widetrac 44/30 in Black Jeep. More stable, turns tighter without the tire hitting the spring. Drawback is about half of the super swamper sticks out the fender. I run narrowtrac on Green Jeep, I just like the way they look... Same tires on the jeep in both pictures.

Im not much of a expert but the 44/30 seems best for trail duty.

Only other thing.. swap knuckles from the 30's to get the the bigger disc setup and the 6-bolt locking hubs on the trail rig if you go with the "wide trac". That way parts are still correct for the yr on brakes also.

    Hope that helps.

    Chuck,
The first thing I did to my Jeep was to change the axle from the AMC 20 to a Dana 44. I had one buddy spin his AMC 20 in his driveway (climbing over the 1 inch curb) and another comming out of Jack in the Box. So I did not have much faith in it and I found a great deal on the Dana 44. Many have told me that the AMC 20 is nearly as strong as the Dana 44 if you put in a solid axle kit. Hope it helps.

i'd probably go with the w/t d44/d30 combo, although i like the n/t 44/30 combo that i have. just finished swapping out the outers on the front to convert from drums to discs. much nicer.

Dave, it’s not your typical frame so I could see how it may through someone off it looks like it was fabbed so the lights could cover a wider area.

I would like to thank all who responded your info was very helpful and much appreciated. :)

I'm going with the WT 44/30.

Edit: sac13, when I get around to doing the swap and I haven't sold the 20/30 complete I will PM you concerning parts.

Update, after pulling the cover off the WT D44 I found it has 3.31 gears. The PO mistakenly told me it had 3.54 gears.

    I now have a NT AMC 20 3.54 - NT D30 3.54 and a WT D44 3.31 – WT D30 3.54

After reading Hansh thread http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37223 it seems he would like to swap gears from the AMC 20 to the WT D44 if I’m reading his post correctly.

“I like that it has the 44 though. If I keep it, a regear might be in order. I have a 4:56 LS/posi AMC 20 sitting in the barn, OTOH, it does get decent gas milage.” - Hansh

If this is correct can I swap my R&P from the NT 20 with 3.54 gears into the D-44?

The AMC 20 has a slightly larger R&P with a 28 spline compared to the D44 30 spline and different size housings.

Edit: I’m thinking because of the size difference the swap isn’t possible??

I'm certainly not afraid of using a 20/30 setup for anything I'm gonna do, 'couse if I had both I don't know what I'd do.

I'm set on going with the WT D44 just have to find the least expensive way to re-gear to 3.54

Note: my update and question is in the last post third page.

    nickmil In mothballs.

You cannot put the AMC 20 gears in the Dana 44 or vice/verse. Simply won't work. Design differences in the pinion, diff case, # of ring gear bolts, etc. make this unworkable. You should be able to find 3.54 gears for the 44 pretty cheap. Nickmil
