So I picked up the rebuild kit for my Carter YF 938SD carb in my 57 CJ5 from NAPA, along with a new float. They had it listed as just 938 (without the SD), so I'm hoping it works.

I've never rebuilt a carb before, are there any things I should look out for? When I take this apart should I soak all the individual parts in 2+2 carb cleaner and wipe them off? Any parts I shouldn't soak in 2+2? :?

    Thanks,
    Evan

Hopefully you have a manual of some sort. If you have a digital camera take lots of pics as your taking it apart and lay everything out the same way and in the same order you take it apart. Good luck and have fun!:)

Everything I've read, and I've been reading a lot on rebuilding carbs this week, suggests that the only kit to get for one of these carbs come from The Carburetor Shop. Anything else won't have the proper parts and will result in a poorly running Jeep. YFs were used on everything from the F-head to the Ford 300 CID I6.

YMMV. But I've seen nary a good word about FLAPS kits for the Jeep YF...

There's diagrams in the picture bank section of the gallery if you need good exploded views to help put it back together.

Do everything in a shallow pan so you don't loose parts.

Search alot of forums, read on the 3B page and G503 both. They have good info on rebuilding them as well as in this forum.

No reason not to soak all the old parts. Just be sure all the passages are cleaned out!

Great! thanks! I'll give this a shot. Hopefully all the parts will match up. I'm assuming if something doesn't match up in the rebuild kit i'll be able to tell by comparing the new part to the original and in worst case scenario I'll atleast have cleaned it all inside and out...

The nice thing about rebuilding a YF is it's also just about as simple as a carb can get...if you've never torn into a carb it's a great place to start. Let me know when you get your Quadrajet apart  .

Don't lose the ball and weight from the accelerator-pump check valve when you turn the float bowl upside down! It's happened to more than one person. Remember to put them back before you finish. Search the archives on this site..

    Not much to it otherwise.

    Have fun.
