    R) Before you say drive shaft check out the pic. It looks like something used to go there but broke. this is behind the backing plate (removed) goes. The cable for the parking brake was always loose and brake never worked. The backing plate was covered in old petrified grease; and is now soaking in mineral spirits along with the drum and other parts. I just dont know if i should be worried about this broken-looking part.

That used to be part of the casting where the brake lever bolt screwed into and the lever pivoted on. Your parking brake won't work with out this part. You will have to replace that whole piece if you want your Ebrake to work. If that is what I am seeing.

I had a feeling that might have been it. I guess I can always leave the jeep in gear to keep it from rolling.... for now..

Yup, what Vhunter said except there was a stud in there that was pinned in place. Real common for those to get broken when the transfer case gets removed and slammed on the ground. A used one should be available from several sources. I'd put a wanted ad on the board here. Someone probably has one laying around. Nickmil

I wonder if a longer bolt would thread into whats left of that assembly, you know, temporarily.

Oh also, anyoneknow where I can find where the speed-o cable goes? The original speedo cables gone, and I cant find where it connects to in the tranny. Jeep service manual says it goes in the transfer case but I cant find it there either.

The speedo cable plugs into the side of that little housing that the bottom is broke off of, it should go up and to the right side of where you are pointing in your photo.

A good machine shop should be able to repair that, if you wanted to. Used to fix things like that a lot back when I was an oilfield repair machinist.

I'm pretty sure I have one of those. Send me an email if you are interested and I will check.

Patchycj5, I have the same problem having the stud broken off and the thread broken. The part name according to the manual is called "rear cap", I ordered one from Peter DeBella jeep parts. Here's the link to it.

    http://www.debellajeepparts.com/

They are very helpful and carry many parts for jeeps.

    Hope this helps..
