Had you gone through the '27 prior to the carnage? Replaced any parts? I'm far from an expert on axles, but common sense tells me that if there is excessive backlash (play) in the differential, that can really put a lot of stress on driveline components as they get unloaded and then re-loaded under stress. (Remember doing neutral-drops in the old man's Impala back in high school?)

Whe I put the locker in my rear Dana 41 I found that the axle was really sloppy, and I thought my R & P was shot. I installed the locker anyway, and much to my surprise almost all of the slop in my rear axle assembly was gone! Seems that the spider and side gears were worn, not the ring & pinion!

Also, you may have had a bad component in there just waiting to fail.

Id say replace it this time, and if it breaks again swap in a 44. Main reason everyone swaps in 30s is because they are an easy swap. But if your breaking axles that much I'd venture to guess your going to be breaking 30s occasionaly. So just jump to a 44 and call it good.

I dont remember all the details, but I do remember he walked away. Was buckled in and had a full cage. Probably the only things that saved his life.

One of the best upgrades you can do for the 27 is installing a powr lock. Not only is the diff brutally strong, but it will help eliminate "torque swapping" where the wheel in the air suddenly receives all the power, only to slam down on the ground applying that power plus rotating mass suddenly back into the drivetrain.

usually only one thing causes this : driver error
regardless of the front axle, D25, 27, 30 or even the 44, airborne is about the worst situation you could subject the front axle to.
airborne + skinny pedal = front axle carnage
    that's it, plain and simple
keep 'em on the ground and keep 'em alive
