I have a 62 CJ-5. It has a battery box blank on the right side of the cowl. The battery in mounted under the hood. I also have what I was told is a 63 CJ-6. The cowl on it is smooth all the way across, no blank. Does anyone know what year they quit putting in the battery box blank? because I am not certiam my CJ-6 is a 63. Or was this a random thing that some had and some didnt?

Not for sure but I have a 65 CJ5 here for parts and it has the same tub (fake battery box cover) as the 63 I am doing a resto on..Also have a 63 here for parts also...I have a 66 and 67 no battery fake box..''

SO to answer your question --- I assume in 1965 was the last year for the fake lids.........

68 or 69 was the year. Can't remember off hand because I think 68 was the year they had a hodge podge of parts. Early 68's had stuff like the overhead wipers, snorkle cuttout, batter box cover... last part of the year was the lower wipers, no batter box cover, no snorkle.

"think" it was 68 since thats what mine is and it seems to be one of the "red headed stepchilds" of that year.

Battery box didn't last that long, neither did the snorkel cutout, going by MOP's which is mostly original.

    That's an unoriginal tub then.

My '64 doesn't seem to have the cowl battery box either.

It would be real cool if someone could post a pic of the cowl batt box.

hmmm. now that you mention it the old tub I had may not have had that battery cover. It did have the snorkle hood though.??

That may have lasted longer, MOP's is conspicuously absent on the hood though and we know it's a very original Jeep.

    [general comment for the thread]
I'd suggest checking the VIN document in the "Where's My VIN?" sticky thread in this forum. The guys doing that are attempting to get stuff like this narrowed down.

Thanks 1963CJ5. My 64 CJ6a has the snorkel cutout but not the batt box.

I asked a good JEEP friend and he told me, he was under the impression they were installed from 61 to mid 65...

Wheres someone that worked at willys ????

If anything this is a good thread..-- tag it ----

The '55 tub that I picked up from tommyb, on this board has the battery box. It's going to end up on my '67. Jeep parts get changed like clothing. Makes it very hard to nail down what parts were available when.

What was installed from '61 to '65? To the best of my knowledge anything discussed in this thread began in '55 and at least ended in '65 or so. Either the cutout or the battery box cover on the cowl.

Which would make it a '67 not a '68 by model year. Could've been titled as a '68, yes screw ups and VIN swaps happen, but the model year was a '67.

My '65 was built in '64.
I have the snorkel cut-out but have no idea what the cowl battery box would be if I had it on my Jeep.
What would I be looking at?

My battery is mounted on the pass. side firewall.
Looks like it was done as a modification, (maybe as part of the engine swap)........with the stock 4 cyl where would the battery placement be in a 65 tux?

Then you don't have one. R)

It's one of those "if you have to ask" sorta things. If you have to ask, then you have a tub with the faux battery box cover. If you don't know what it is, I'd be willing to bet, your Jeep doesn't have one.

That would be the right timeframe for what I was thinking when they phased them out.
