Hi all finally got around to poking around with the 1950 CJ5. (Only sat for 5 years:) ). That said got the engine running last night, after that I found a few issues. The shift shaft will come out of the shift forks. Everything seems to be tight. What happens is if a gear is forced the shifter wont go in any gear but the one that it was in when it pulled out. (I THINK its pulling out). To fix I rotate cap use screw driver to put in neutral and re attach shift shaft. Then I am good again until it pops out. Any one know why this does it? Shift shaft warn or something else? 2nd is T-case (dana 300) would only go neutral and 4low, After quite a bit of coaxing she went into 4H then into 2H. Afraid to change her out of that until I have more time to work on here. Think this just might have been tough due to sitting so long?

    Thanks again!

Is the shifter coming out of the tranny or just out of the rails or are the forks coming loose on the rails? I just cant see tightening the forks on the rail just from removing the cap that holds the shifter in place.

The T-176 is famous for being jammed in gear.

End Of shift lever seems to come loose from groves in shift forks. I carry a screw driver and push and rotate cap pull shift lever, use screw drive to slide forks back in neutral, reattach lever. Seems to come out in any gear, I know it has in reverse and 1st. think maybe 2 also.

Thanks for your help. I can buy a new shift lever if it is warn but cant tell as don't know what new looks like. My only other thought would be warn grove in shift forks or cap no holding down the shift lever tight.

Figured it is a ware issue. Thinking that this might be common problem that someone could advise.

    Thanks
