    Ouch!

Yeah, looks like you're on the right track... ignore what I was telling you about pulling the distributor. I had misunderstood, thinking it had been pulled. I see now that the problem wasn't that the rotor was in the wrong position, but that the dist cap was on backwards.

Sorry to hear about the busted cap. Looks like you're on the right track, though.

    Anything's possible with a little guidance. ;)

Well, I haven't yet gotten a new Dist cap, so, in the mean time, I figured I would take apart the distributor....
Glad I did. as it was real crusty. I removed the points and filed them a bit. I saw just how the shaft position effects when the whole deal sparks etc. I think I got it to the TDC place and all. So, I also read about a dozen threads that say to simply put in electronic ignition and forget all the points stuff.
I think I will do that as soon as I make sure the motor actually runs.

But, the next thing that happened.....real stupid.......!
The PO had the red battery wire going to the negative terminal. and visa versa.
SO, I had removed the battery to recharge it, and ...YEP I put the red on + and the black on -
So, smoke started to come out of the engine near the coil.
I right away unplugged the battery, but, then I put them on correctly and more smoke.

    Then I stopped and accessed.....
The red wire from the Alternator to the starter was completely cooked bare.
SO, I replaced it. then put the battery back in, and attempted to start it....no, then,
I charged the battery all night, but, it still does nothing.

I then checked all the connections and the wiring harness from the engine, alt etc to the ballast resistor. All are ok.
So the battery is charging while in the Jeep, and the AMP light is on....without the key being on. When you turn on the key, the light goes out.
I think this might be draining my battery as I did the light bulb deal on the pos. terminal of the battery and the light lights.

So is this a result of me frying something, or just a badly wired ignition switch. The PO seems to have replaced the ign. switch as the old one is in the glove box.

He also had the radio spliced into the ignition switch, and the heater fan wires unplugged.
I got the wiring diagram, but it doesn't show a heater.

My question....is the ballast resistor burned out.
Could the coil be burned out.
    How to test them....?
    Thanks

Help.....! Please....I know I'm less than a true mechanic , but, I have now spent about 30 hours reading this forum..( and it's simply Great....a wealth of information) But,...still I need a few answers. Should attaching the battery with the + and - wires reversed fry everything.....!
I can't find the problem, but each time I attach the battery, the AMP idiot light comes on....no key in the ignition.

sounds like you fried the charging components, aka voltage regulator etc

OK, in the aftermath, I found that the alternator...3 wire had both the 1 and 2 post connected together, and running to the AMP instrument light.

Seems undamaged, but I read this is incorrect.

I haven't changed anything, and, the alt has a wire going from the alt to the ignition switch....?
Further, seems like after the first smoke, and when I reattached the battery's wires correctly, the melted wire from the alt to the starter was touching the coil. This probably caused the second smoke.

 I will buy all new parts, but my question is, how do I test the stuff that might be ruined. Although I have read lot's here....some stuff is still real sketchy, and with the smoke....I'm a bit shy on try it and see without some guidance....!

    Need Electrical info

Well ...it snowed here, so Jeep fixin and all the rest is canceled.

I think what I really need is a wiring diagram, that shows what wires go to the ignition switch and . I have collected up huge amounts of info so far, but nothing actually shows the rear of an ignition switch.

My three wire alternator seems to be wrong, but when the Jeep got here, and with the dist cap on back wards, the thing ran......real rough ....but I drove it up and down the drive way.

I realize this is a hard way to do things, but slowly but surely I'm gaining the understanding required to further mess with it....without ruining things.

Problem #1 AMP light is on with key removed.
Problem #2 None of the other ....temp or fuel gage work at all.

Prob #3 Alternator seems wired wrong.....two wires with the plug into the alt are wired together, and go to the amp light.

Problem #4 Alternator has a wire from the batt post going to the ignition, and also a wire going to the starter. Is this correct.....?

Problem#5 The PO had the the plus and minus battery cables reversed , Black was + red was - I then connected them to the battery + to the neg terminal and - to the pos terminal....should this have caused the wire from the alt to the starter to burn up, or is it an indication of wrong wiring.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Ok: Thanks to Kaiser Willys....yes the voltage regulator inside the Alt was burned out. So I got a new alt. and ballast resistor.

Now. I find that the red wire that was attached to the Alt battery terminal, goes into the ignition awitch.

If I hook it up that way....I don't think it will work.
Any help here. The alt diagrams I have collected do not mention anything about running a wire to the ignition.
    Any one know ....?

    HELP Wiring photos HELP

    Someone please help here.
I am working through this, I have many new parts now including an alt which was bad.
I'm ready to hook all this back together, and go from there.
My question is, I have a red wire that goes from the ignition to WHERE.

    Photo's above might help.

    Thanks.

that almost looks like you need to cut that end off and butt connect it two the big red wire out of the regulator<aka the 2 prong plug in the side of the alt

ok i think i got it you said the two wires are together right?? seperate them cut that huge lug off of the wire in question and connect it to the red wire in the two wire plug, and hook the other wire out of the alt to the one that both are connected to now,if that makes any sense

Yea, I got a cap, and ballast resistor, and rotor, and will get a new coil, and points if need be.
I found out that the alt wires should not both be together, and the white should go to the amp bulb, and the red to either the alt post or somewhere down the line.

But, I was confused as to where the wire from the ignition switch...the red wire should be hooked up in the engine compartment.
Some say it should go on the solenoid 3rd terminal to by pass the 9 volts coming out of the ballast resistor to the coil when the ignition switch is in the start mode,, others say it should go to the battery....
So, that is the question that's holding me up.

The fat red wire with the large connector on it. That red wire.

Seems like the ignition switch has all the original connectors on it.
and previously that red wire was hooked up to the batt post on the alt. Was this correct.

Since the photo I cut the two white and red wire apart and reinstalled the new altornator. It has a wire going from the batt terminal to the starter.
The white wire is hooked into the amp bulb wire , the red goes no where yet but will either go to the batt terminal on the alt, or down line to a hot connection.
