I found that the wire to my amp light had been cut off about 8" short of the alternator (generator).
I extended it and hooked it up where I thought it should go and it was on with the key off.
I am going to attach a couple pix to show what I have.
The blue wire from the ballast resistor goes down to the starter.

I think the other blue wire (from the generator) goes to the same post as the hot lead from the battery. This would create the always hot condition........

I plan on going to a Delco, but not quite yet.

Did you ever figure this out. I have a 71 Cj5 V6 with the AMP light on
when the key is off. I think it's wrong....but don't want to make anything worse

I always thought it went from Alternator to 1 side of Amp light, other side of Amp light back to battery. Not really sure though.

It should be hooked to the Aux terminal next to the output terminal on the back of the 35A alternator. Looking from the backside of the alt it is to the left. think I see the terminal in question at the very bottom of your pic. fsm is invaluable tool.
