Are 4 cyl. and 6 cyl. gas tank the same?
    I have a 1966 cj5 with the v6 225 engine.
The PO had scrapped the gas tank before I bought it, so I got a steel one from 4wd hardware p/n 912008
It doesn't fit quite right the filler neck is about an inch to much forward (toward the Firewall) I hacked it in there anyways because the tub is junk.

I ask about the sizes because 4wd lists a different tank under the plastic tanks for the 1967 - 71 with v6, it does mention something about a lock ring sending unit though. p/n 0042.
the sending unit the PO gave me bolted on, maybe a difference between 1966 and 1967?

If the steel tanks are all the same the difference for the filler neck may be because of the PO's floor repairs also.

    Thanks,

More than likely your fit issue arises from the floor repair combined with the quality of the tank. Not the first time I've heard of the neck being a little "off". I think there is a difference in sending units may be with a return line for vapor. All the V6 Jeeps I parted out were tankless by the time I got them, the 4 cyl rigs didn't have the return line, just the sender and wire. I'm sure someone with a little more info will chime in here.

The neck could also be off if it's a 2A/3A/3B gas tank.

IIRC, the sending unit is the only difference between :hurrican: & :v6: fuel tanks, and that might not even be the case for early :v6: . Some sending units have a return line as part of the emissions system. Like said earlier, make sure its a CJ5 tank: the CJ3 tank looks very similar.

My v-6 had the original tank with a lock ring . The only tank I could find to replace it was a bolt on sending unit type .The first one had two lines to it ,to and from the fuel pump .I bought a bolt on pickup/sending unit and all is good for over 10 years now .

Tinker is correct. The 912008 fuel tank application should be listed as 1955-66 :hurrican: . It uses a bolt on float 914850, that is a float only not a pick up. It uses a 1/4" fuel line (vs a 5/16" for the :v6:) on the floor on the tank and offers no vapor return. The tank is physically the same size as the 1967-70, but you just can't use the original lock ring and sending unit with the vapor return.
