My son and I are rebuilding a '64 CJ5 with the 4 Cylinder engine. We've got the crankshaft out of the engine, but I am trying to figure out how I can pull the large timing gear attached to the end of the cam shaft. I have a gear puller but there isn't enough clearance behind the sides of the gear to attach the puller. DOes anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Are you gonna save it or replace w/new? I've popped a bunch of them off using two prybars. You want the slim ones they sell at the hardware store, one on either side of the gear ( you may have to use a small shim to get them in snug). Loosen the retaining bolt till just about out. Whack both bars at the same time, I use my hands, and she should pop right off. I've never broken one that way, looked good enuff to reuse IMO. The backside of the fiber gear has a curved surface behind the two access holes. I could never get a puller to get a good grip there or anywhere else. YMMV
