What could the problem be.

    Just bought 1974 cj5 304. The jeep is smoking pretty bad ( white smoke) and some oil is coming out the exhaust. does it sound like i need to replace the rings?

    could be or could be a head gasket. does it smell like oil? most of the time oil has a bluish tint and antifreeze is more white because its steem. head gasket would explain the white smoke and oil comming out of the tail pipe. but could be a ring? tear it down and see what you find, then you will know for sure.

    Sounds like a head gasket. Any sign of water in the oil?

    an easy wat to tell if its rings or headgasket would be to do a block test,it checks for hydrocarbons in the coolant.you can buy a test kit at most auto parts stores (NAPA)usually has them for about thirty bucks or most garages could perform it fairly cheap
