I was in the process of rebuilding a '64 CJ5 with a T-90 and Spicer 18 Twin Stick. Long story short, the body was in a lot worse shape than I wanted to deal with so I was searching the web for a used rig that I could salvage a body from. I came across a '69 CJ5 in incredible shape (former US Forest Svc. rig with on 17,800 original miles) with the exception of the engine which has issues, so I am using the F-Head I rebuilt from the '64 and installing it in the '69.

The '69 has a T98, and a Spicer 18 Single Stick. I really like the Twin Stick set up from the '64 and was considering using the twin stick transfer case with the T98. Has anyone ever done this and could you give me the pros and or cons about setting up my rig in this fashion.

Another issue is that the '69 has what I've always wanted, a factory installed Koenig PTO winch! Now for a really dumb question, has anyone ever heard of any way that you could have a PTO winch, AND install an over drive unit?

Contact http://www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com/ for an adapter to use a PTO with an overdrive. If the newer T case is in better shape, you can swap the twin stick shifters over to it. Plenty of info on this site regarding the switch.

i have a koenig pto with over-drive on my 1962 jeep truck. was easy to install.hardest part is adding the extension to the winch driveshaft, but that really that hard to do.if i have to do it again i would just buy a length of pto driveline stock and cut a new shaft to the correct length.

I've heard you have to be careful running a PTO off the OD adaptor as the gears in the OD aren't heavy duty enough for serious winching. At least that is what I've been told. Anyone...?

That doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense, the OD will easily handle the output of a moderately built V8, for argument lets say 200 HP.

According to my calculations a PTO driven winch (Ramsey 8000Lb) at rated line speed & torque takes about 3 1/2 HP to do it's thing.

    I really don't see a problem:)

Hagerstown that's not to far. 1.5-2 hours away? Sounds like a great find! We need pics!
You can swap to twin sticks, I just did it. You have to diss. transfercase compleatly to swap out long shift rod and fork, and then you use the whole twin setup off the front of your other thransfercase. Not really that complecated. I'm also running a PTO winch, w/addapter, and an overdrive, hooked to a sm465 trans. Or I mean I will be when its all togeather.R) I do have all the peices now. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for all of your advice and counsel. My son and I are jazzed about getting this '69 up and running for the rest of the summer and into the fall. After which time the body is coming off and being totally restored, luckly there is very little rust and it is essentilly surface rust. We're planning on fixing whatever it is that needs fixing on the body, and then sending the the body out to be rhinolined underneath and inside the tub and getting a top of the line paint job. While it's out for rework we'll concentrate on the engine, frame and running gear.

It's weird, but the guy I bought this rig off from had had it advertised in the classified section of this site. I hadn't seen it here but found it on Craigslist purely by accident. He sold it because he wanted a rock crawler. I'll try and attach a picture of the '69 here but I'll probably screw it up.

Windyhill- Yeah, Hagerstown isn't far from you. If you're ever heading down my way send me a message and maybe we can get together and talk over a couple of cold ones.
