Does anyone have a picture of the stock Steering link (column to box) on a CJ5 (mine's a 75) with a v8 and power steering? Mine has a chevy 350 in it, and the PO had a weird multi link setup from the column to the box. The column had a lot of slop in it, so I replaced it, but the multiple u-joints in the linkage down to the box are also sloppy so I want to replace them as well. I'm not sure that I can run a straight steering shaft (u-joint at each end) without interference from the motor. The new column is out of an S-10. Any ideas or experience with how to best tackle this? The jeep is stored 200 miles away so I can't get any pics to show what I'm talking about.

    Thanks,
    Steve

A stock steering shaft will only have 2 ujoints, if yours has mor than 2 it also should have a bearing stand off next to one of the ujoint that is in the middle. This bearing keeps the shaft from whipping a round.

Thanks Andrew. It DOES have a standoff (a heim joint) down off the frame, then it juts over to the box. It think this arrangement will probably work fine if I replace all the parts. The current joints are really sloppy, and the new column introduced a NEW joint up where it exits the column. The old column did not have a ujoint there. I tried to mount another standoff to support it up there, but it was just too hodge-podge (is that a word?) for me. I'm going to see if I can run it straight down, and if not, just replace the whole thing with new shafts, joints and standoff bearing.

    Thanks again.
