starter - ring gear mismatch?

When I got my engine back from a local overhaul, I added my rebuild T-90 with new clutch and ring gear on fly wheel (old one had a bad spot chewed into the teeth), dropped it on the chassis and did a fire-up check. (normal fussing with the timing and fuel, but that worked ok) But I threw significant (1" x 1/4" x 1/4") chunk out of the flywheel! OK, new flywheel comes with ring gear and I get it all back together on the chassis (but do not try to start again at that time).

Then while I was doing the sheet metal stuff on the body, I sent the starter and generator to a local auto-electric shop for new brushes, and clean up. The body work went a lot longer than I expected. Soooo... two years later I get it all put back together and (with new wiring) turn the switch to start, and the starter spins like crazy. No evidence that it will engage the flywheel.

Now the Jeep is at the auto-electric shop and they claim that my flywheel ring gear is "the wrong one." I have 3 ring gears now... the original, the one on the chipped flywheel, and the one in the Jeep. The Jeep is still at the shop, but the two that I can put my hands on are exactly the same, 129 teeth. Would a replacement F134 flywheel come with a different ring gear?

 

Can"t speak about flywheel but I am wondering if auto elec shop put the correct bendix on when they redid starter? Just a thought.

 

Sounds like the starter isn't throwing the gear forward into engagement at all. Is it at home with you, or at the shop? If with you hook it up to a batter and remote start switch. touch the switch and watch the gear. if it shoots forward then spins, should be all right. If it doesn't, then needs to be opened up again.R):hurrican:

 

Well, that is why it has been spending quality time at the shop. (Maybe I should not have said "I'm not in a hurry.") I did the batter to the starter test and it was not clear at all that the gear had any inclination to jump out.

I understand most parts are interchangeable between the two 134 engines.

Maybe they did send you the wrong flywheel and ring :?gear?

 

Great page find! Although this does not solve the problem, it gives me another path to take.
