O.K., so power steering never came stock on an early CJ, but where else could I post and get my questions answered?. Here is the story, I installed a power steering pump and bracket out of a 80's Buick regal with a 3.8 liter motor and plumbed the pump to a Saginaw power steering box out of a wagoner. The power steering works great except when in the rocks, at which time it squeals like a stuck pig. I have checked the fluid level and its condition and it looks fine......it's not burnt. I currently run modest 31" tires so there isn't a huge torque on the box and pump. Is it possible that the car pump is just too small for my application? Or, is there something that I can do to stop the squeal? Maybe someone here has had a similar experience.

may be the belt slipping. have you got it tight enough? belt could be glazed. is it a new belt? oil could have possibly gotten on the belt or pulley.

The belt is old, but tight. I'll take a closer look at the condition of the belt and replace if needed.

Same here on belt. Remember that the belt grabs the pully on the sides and not the bottom of the groove. Your pump pully may not be matched width to crank pully for good grip. You think?
