I have a set of 56 willys cj5 axles. Front is a Dana 25, rear is a Dana 44. The rear is offset. Gear ratio unknown. Whatdo you guys think, are they worth anything? or do they go to the scrap yard?

A '56 CJ-5 would have had the 4-cylinder F-head in it from the factory, so they would more than likely have 5.38:1 gears in them from the factory. They are by not exactly rare, but then they ARE 51 years old. I'd sure hate to see them go to the scrapyard, but due to the size and weight factors they are difficult to sell to anyone that isn't local to you. IMHO try to find a local buyer that needs them for a resto or a moderate build.

If I might ask, why are you getting rid of them?

I would definitely check the ring and pinion out in both of them, especially the front, since finding 5.38s for a 25 (assuming they are) in good shape is usually either difficult or sheer luck. :)

If you need 5.38's for a 25 let R&P know. They probably have about 25 good used sets on the shelf. Now 5.38's for a 27 is rare as hen's teeth.

Back on topic. A Dana 44 rear, in that year may be 10 spline axles but could be 19 spline. The 19 spline axles are much better so have a little more value. In my area the rear would be worth about $75 to $150 depending on condition and which axles. I recently bought one with 19 spline axles and 11" brakes with good gears for $100 for someone else at a swap meet. The front around here isn't worth much except to a guy restoring one or that wants to keep his existing vehicle going without converting so, probably about $25-$75 depending on condition. Where you are at value may be somewhat different. Nickmil

If you can't sell them complete, I'd tear them down for the axle shafts, R&P, knuckles, etc and just junk the housings. The individual parts will still be worth a few bucks to someone, somewhere and be much more shippable.
