I have a 2003 rubicon that i am considering putting volvo portal axles on and was wondering about the feasabiility and practicality of trying to put the rubicon axles onto my 59 cj-5 with a 134 f head. Would the 4.10 gears work out with the hamster motor? This is all still hypothetical, but i found a local-ish source for the portals and am in the financial planing stages, so i just thought i'd check. Any ideas, problems, comments?

Other then the fact you have an offset t-case and that is a centered rear axle along with the fact that the front axle has a driverside drop for a TJ and a passenger side drop for the CJ nothing. In other words it is not a feasable swap.

Not to mention the width issue of the TJ axles being way wider and having to carve off all the coil spring mounts or convert the CJ to coils. Nickmil

In a jeep? Anything is possible. But you will have to overcome the aforementioned obstacles pointed out in the posts above before you are able to overcome any obstacles on the trail. Another option would be to sell those 44's from the rubicon and buy a differnt set for your ecj5. I bet you'd come out ahead and offset the cost of your new portals. I've had several sets under my ecj5. I currently have a set from a cj7 wide track. I got disc brakes, a wider stance, etc. all with very little mod. I did move from my 18 to a 20 t-case. I keep 3 t cases (18, 20, and 300) and 3 sets of axles (couple 44's, 25, 20, 30) on hand all for the same jeep. Every few years or less (if I want a change) I swap, upgrade, build up, etc.

The beautiful thing about jeeps - anything is possible - with time and money. But my guess is you already know this.

    Good luck with your projects.

thank you for the input. i'm new to the ecj-5 thing, so i was just checking. i will probably just go ahead and sell the rubi axles to offset the cost.
