Vernco has a pretty good writeup here.

There are 3 different joints, Bendix, Rzeppa, and Spicer. The Spicer joints look like regular U-joints. On my axle there was a "Spicer" tag on the bolts that hold the knuckle seal.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, buy a Factory Service Manual to do this stuff yourself. It has the process to disassemble and reassemble the knuckle, and describes and illustrates the three different u-joints used in the 25/27 axles. By '71 it was a Spicer joint.

http://www.thejeep.com/ has them for a very reasonable price and can also supply you with the parts you need. I've had better luck with Turner's (thejeep.com) than Krage (Jeepdoc). YMMV.

not that big of a deal if you have ever had a front end apart, if it has the u joint which it prob does my 70 d27 does it is not much different than a open knuckle as far as replacement goes, and you can prob get the joint from your local flaps

If it's your axle U-joint, it shouldn't make any noise with the hubs unlocked and in 2WD. If it does, that ain't it.

best way to find it is to drain the oil from the axle and see if any metal comes out. next is to pull the diff cover and spindle and see what it looks like inside.

Limited slips are known to make a clicking sound, if they don't get the additive in the oil.
