    Howdy y'all,

Just completed a disc swap on my 71 CJ5 using a 78 CJs front D30 brake components. I plan on keeping the spindle & hub as spares/upgrades for the D27 if need be. Should I keep the steering linkages too? Are they able to be used in a Saginaw conversion?

    Also, what's a good asking price for a stock, open D30 diff/housing?

    Thanks for any input!

Around here that housing would probably go for $50 to $100. If you don't mind me asking, how come you didn't just install the D30 axle complete?

X2 on the last part. I get housings for free, shafts are worth $30-40.

The complete D30 swap didn’t come out to be the optimal choice for my situation. I would have needed new gears, a carrier, diff install kit, spring perches, driveshaft, u—joints, steering connections, etc… Not to mention I don’t have a garage to work in.

My 71 has 4.88 gears and the 3 speed w/ just slightly oversized tires. All the effort & money put into the D30 (figured $4-600) still wouldn’t have helped the roaring engine @ highway speeds. Instead, I picked up an Overdrive for $600 and swapped that in while doing the brake swap. I’ll still maintain the low 4.88s, have an OD, and disc brakes in the front. Also rebuilding the Ross box while I’m at it, waiting for the sector shaft to come in from JeepDoc.

Thank you for the prices. I'll be making a listing on Craigslist this week!
