Well I got most of the frame done tonight. I still ahve to weld on the spring mounts and decide on a regular hitch or a pintle lunette. Probably pintle but who knows where my fleeting mind will take me. It is built out of 2x2 1/4 inch thick angle iron with a 3x3 for the tongue with 2 inch channel supporting the tongue. I will build myself the sheetmetal brake i found online to copy. Fortunately i have long enoguh peices of steel that i can bend up the entire sides of the trailer :) The tub will be about 12 inches tall and have a tailgate. I am getting a set of CJ springs to use for it, only thing i really need is the axle spindles to weld in my axle tube or find a cheap compelte axle. Oh yeah and find 2 rims and tires. Hopefully next week i will have my sheetmetal to start making the tub :)

OH here are pics of the recent progress.

you know that galvanized metal puts out very harmful fumes when welded, right?

but it looks good so far!

Yup, been drinking my milk. I closed the doors for the night, they are always open. And i try to grind off as much as i can. Still not fun stuff. But i get alot of galvanized metal for free from work.

Are you gonna put a tub on it or make a flatbed ?

Gonna build a tub for it. and have it be able to be taken on and off of the frame like a m416.

I am not sure ,as of now, probably not, but things always can change. I think the jeep tailgate is going to be taller thanthe trailer tub

Looks like a good start. Miratic Acid is supposed to take galvanizing off of metal and make is safe to weld. Theres stories of people getting poisoned from galvanized metal and it killing them.

A friend gave me this pintle to ball adaptor for my M416

It has a 10K lb. rating. We have used it to haul a few times but not offroad yet. I thought I'd share this for the sake of confusion. I think it was origanally used to move heavy machines around in an industrial enviroment.

IMO I'll never go back to ball hitches for my junk. Even my tow bar now has a pintle on it. Much more secure.
My old ball hitch used to lift off in it's own, not very secure. This was the old tow bar, I was hitching it up at the shop and whoops! Grabbed it and up it came. The lunette is basically fool proof and easier to hitch up.

I will miost likey do the pintle hook. I am used to the banging. In all reality the traielr wont be going "offroad" as much as just being a trailer to hold stuff. But it will be cool looking :) And it will make a killer hay ride for the kids this halloween, i will tow it behind the jeep and take the kids trick or treating :) Now i need to find some orange gels to make the jeep headlights halloweeny :)

I have my ball hitch adjusted as tight as I can feasibly go with it. I have the 'pivot' that the original lunette had on my 416, but with a ball hitch. I was twisting the trailer up in the driveway with my dad and the ball hitch popped off. I am looking for an original lunette to put back on the 416.

    Trailer looks good!
