    Acquiring CJ-6 Title

    Hey guys,
I got ahold of a 1971 CJ-6 last fall that was my grandfathers way back when which I can't wait to restore. Needs a frame up and probably a new tub....anyways I went to the courthouse today to file for a lost title with the VIN number and the ladies said the jeep wasn't in the system and wanted my License plate number which are not on the jeep. Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can get my plate number or my Title??

You're best bet is to work with the courthouse and local law enforcement.

I don't know how we'll be much help as the laws vary from state to state and each situation is different.

I already told you what I'd do. I'd talk with the folks in charge. Here it's the KHP. Heck, talk with an attorney if you need to.

Someone can tell you what you need to do. It's just a matter of finding the right person. :)

In many states when there has been no Department of Motor Vehicles activity for a certain amount of time (registration, smog, inspection, etc) they get dropped from the system. If you have a registration kicking around with your grandfather's name on it and a death certificate that can go a long way to getting you in the right direction. I agree with Sparky, the laws from state to state vary so much that to ask that question on this site where we have people from all the states and even Internationally, we really can't give you accurate info. Keep trying, don't give up. you will be able to find the right person that can help you out. Frequently the state police can help, inspection stations if you have them, smog stations, etc. can at least point you in the right direction. Good luck. Nickmil

When I bought my '60 CJ I titled it in Texas and I sent them a copy of the plates I was going to use. I registered it as a an antique and used '60 plates from that era. All I needed to do was send them photos of the plates so they could verify they were the right color for that era and sent me my new registration. I would call these guys up
"The TxDOT Vehicle Titles and Registration Division help desk can be reached for more information at (512) 465-7611" and see what you actually need if trying to register non collector/antique. You may have to wait until you get it back together and get it safety inspection done by an approved station to receive a Vehicle Identification Certificate of Inspection. Either way best bet is to call these guys up and get further info. As previously stated sometimes talking to someone else at the DMV makes a big difference. Good luck.

Dude, I would not do any work until I had a title in hand. Or knew exactly how I was going to get a title (rebuilt process or what ever). In Florida I had a 74 CJ with no title. Before I bought it I reasearched it (cop buddy, repo man buddy and title folks) and found the jeep had not been titled since 1975 in NY. To get a clear title I had to have a rep from the state come out and look at the jeep and verify the VIN, the frame VIN (he could not find that one) and some other stuff. Eventually gave me a paper I had to take to the DMV. Did so that day and got a title in hand. It says "1974 Jeep CJ.

I had a title in hand for another tub that was missing the VIN plate. He said without that vin plate he could not title that jeep. So I have a title in hand for a second jeep I can't use because it has no VIN.

BUt make sure you have everyting in hand.

BTDT, someone got sloppy with a fiberglass tub swap and didn't get a new VIN for the Jeep. But we found frame numbers that matched the title thank goodness.
