The restoration must be taking a toll on these old bones...

I installed a new rear cross member last weekend without giving it a whole lot of thought. I've been working on a rear bumper and so I decided to line it up last night to see how the mounting plates fit.

At first I thought I measured half the bumper in SAE and the other half metric! It didn't line up at all. Additional sips of my Leinenkugel (great regional brew by the way) I found that from the outside frame to the tip of the rear cross member is 10 inches on the passenger side, and 13.5 inches on the drivers side! But I don't see anyway I could have screwed this up save installing the wrong cross member.

Looking in the 74 factory service manual did me no good.

If this is correct, what the heck is the reason?

I didn't quite get what you were talking about at first...

The rear crossmember is shorter on the passenger side to give the exhaust a place to exit.

Thanks for taking the measurements. I feel much better. I'll bolt up the whole thing tonight -- probably make a couple of L-brackets to tie the rear cross memeber into the frame a bit more so I can use the D-rings as legitimate tow points.

I'm exhausting out the drivers side. Why, who knows!

Mine is the same way. Nearly drove me mad when measuring for my bumper. The engineer in me likes everything to be symmetric.
