Crankcase Ventilation

    I have a Chevy 283 in my 52 M38. The engine has been rebuilt and am connecting up hoses. There is a can at the back of the engine block for crankcase ventilation and there is also a PCV valve in the valve cover. Do both of these hoses go to the connection at the base of the carburetor?

    Sounds like you have an early 283 (before pcv) if thats the case You dont need that can at the back of the block. Does it have bolt through the pipe on the rear of the block? If so just remove the can and pipe and plug the hole and use the valve cover pcv.

    pcv to carb base. hose from can at back of block to air cleaner base

    Sounds like I should remove the can and plug the hole as I do not have that type of air filter. Much smaller because of clearance between carburetor and hood. What about a tee off the base of the carburetor and bring both hoses to that point?

    i have this setup in my pickup, and the early early version used a draft tube from there to the bottom of the vehicle, the later early version sounds like what you have , used a pcv valve with 2 hoses, one to the carb, the other to the back of the block, kinda like a inline fuel filter setup, the valve covers on these engines had no hole, rather a breather tube in the front of the intake manifold, that served as both the breather,and the oil fill, last used in 1967 if i recall corectly, you can plug it, or use it, and put a breather filter type cap in the valve cover/covers

    PCV carb, can or valvecover opposie of the PCV to any good filter I use a K&N. your valve covers are newer than your block. the old ones vented through a open tube down by the bellhousing! they could be and were messy oil film attracts dust!

    early version(draft tube) :iagree: does yours have a cap that mounts to the hole with 1 bolt thru the middle and a hose fitting off to the side? if so you can do what i said earlier,or cap it and run the setup like the newer sbc's use
