There is brake picture under Tech library that I have quetion about The picture is labled"10"brakes right rear brake" It is on the second page of brake pictures.

What is the dust cover looking thing that is bolted to the inside of the backing plate. My jeep had these but the were shot and I have not been able to locate any. Is it necessary. The new seal I got seals on the back sie of the hub.

    Thanks!

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    grease protector
if grease/oil were to get by the seals, it catches the grease and directs towards the bottom where it would drip out.
it's purpose is to keep the grease from getting thrown around (centrifugal force) and all over the brake shoe linings.

edit: picture from the axle picture bank

It's important to make sure you line up the shims and grease seal so that the excess grease can flow out the drain hole (it is the hole at the 6 oclock position, and the only one that doesn't have any thru bolts thru the backing plate) . If any of the shims or grease seal are offset, the drain hole will be blocked.

I know Kaiser-Willys has these for sale used if needed. I had to replace one when doing my rear brakes this past summer.
