OK I replaced the timing gear because I lost compression at the beginning of this (posted in April). It looked like I spun the center on the fiber gear and was off a tooth. That fixed it now my compression is 120 in all cyl. I have gas plus I sprayed starting fluid in (Sparingly). New cap, wires, plugs. points and condencer. I have a OK spark. I static timed it and it starts to start but dies in 3-5 seconds sort of chugging. I moved the dist by hand with the same results. Looked for vacuum leaks but can't find any. My plugs are not wet when I pull them but it smells like it's flooding when the choke is pulled. The best cugging I get is with no choke and no gas . After cranking the breather hose (not connected) on the oil fill puts out a little smoke. I've checked firing order 50 times 1342 any help would be great or anything else to check. I did notice my dist rotor points up toward the engine not away like in the past at 1TDC but I moved my wires to compensate. Plus I've moved the wires to all postion around the dist with no results. This is a F-134

The normal position for Nr1 on the cap is a 5O'clock position looking down on the cap from the right side of engine. The firing order is like you say 1342 in a counter clock wise direction.

I had the oil pump out when I replaced the cam gear (Thought I would rebuild it but there is nothing to rebuild). I think it went in a couple teeth off but I didn't know how to get it in the same. Does it matter as long as I move the wires to match?

Since the engine rotates twice to one rotation of the dist rotor, you need to make sure that NR1 is coming up on comp. The oil pump shaft is slotted and the slot is slightly off-set from center, therefore the dist will only drop in the slot in one direction only. Do you have a FSM to set up the oil pump properly to engage the dist for correct NR1 pointing?

No I didn't set up the oil pump properly. I have the Ludel rebuilder's manual and I found what you are talking about. I will redo the pump this weekend . THANKS Walt hopefully this will work I'll let you Know.

OK set up oil pump so I have 5 OClock position on the rotor at #1 TDC. Still the same result the engine starts to start (chugs) but dies both static timed and moving the dist by hand. This is getting frustrating.

OK it sounds like you have ignition voltage to the coil on crank but not in ignition run position. Are you getting 12V at the + term on coil with key ON and points OPEN.

Walt I just got done checking your suggestion about the coil and I had power when the key was in the on position. While I was at it I decided to switch to one of the old coils I had sitting around. Hooked it up and it started right up. Now I have to readjust my carb that I messed with yesterday but all is looking up. I thought coils were good or bad never just kind of bad? Thanks for the help Walt.
