Front turn signal housing ??

Looking for the best way to update my front park/turn signals. Originally 6v, going to 12v. Original cloth wiring is shot, and the original housing tail is too short to accommodate later model pigtail and spring. As I would like to keep my original turn signal housings w/clear glass lenses, can I punch out the old socket and put in an 1157 style housing and pigtail? Will it fit? Hate to cut up the housings and find out there was an easier way. Later housing w/plastic lenses have the wrong stud spacing for the '56 grill anyways, so no go there. Ideas? TIA

 

I have black out lights on mine ,I removed the plates inside and found trailer leds that fit it the little slot.only problem is they blink but don't have running lights. the cops can't tell their not on 'cause the are blinded by the H4's.
