I have a 1975 CJ5 with a 304, points distributor, ballast resistor and a really nasty cobbled up wiring harness. I just installed an Edelbrock SP2P manifold and a 600 cfm Edlebrock carb. In the process, the wires on the coil and ballast resistor became disconnected/broken/mixed up. Can someone tell me where the wires to the coil and resistor come from / go to? The only wire I still have connected is one from the negative terminal of the coil to the distributor. The wiring diagram is of no help to me. Thanks.

should be two hots ("+" pos 12v) one keyed hot, one hot when starting. keyed hot goes to one side of the resistor, then anther wire goes on the other side of the resistor to the + on the coil. the start hot wire can go on the + of the coil. the start wire is only on while starting. after that the keyed hot goes on with only 9.6 or so volts to the coil. (you can buy a coil with the resistor built in but more than likely it doesn't have that coil, 12v will burn up a coil with out a resistor) it would be a good idea go use a volt meter, a test light will not tell you if you have 12v, it lights on 10, 9, etc.

I like to use a test lite for this repair (easier) or if no lite, use your volt meter. Here's what you do. Connect your tester lead to one of the wires (other tester lead to ground) and turn on the ign switch to on position only. One of those wires should become hot. That wire will connect to one of the ballast resistor connections. Now connect tester to the wire that comes hot in the start only position. This wire will connect to the other term of the ballast resistor (or) connect to the pos + term of the coil. Now connect your tester to the neg term of the coil. You should have power with ign ON and Start. Connect the wire from neg term (coil) to dist and your done.

A 75 304 would have been a solid state points-less Prestolite distributor. Looks as if a PO has "upgraded" you to a earlier points style distributor. For around a hundred bucks 4WD Hardware has the GM HEI distributors that are a simple 1 wire hookup.

Thanks for all your help. Got it all squared away. I plan on installing an HEI in the near future.
