    what is the better choice:
A pto running off a danna 18 TC
or a PTO running off the SM420 transmision.

I got a PTO unit that slaps on the back of the danna 18 and will need the converter to fit my over drive.. or i can go with a chelsea for the SM420.

Which do you think is the better? The small PTO units that run off the TC case are... well rather week looking and are chain driven.. Where as the chelsea PTO's are just solid gears running off the side of the SM420.

I will be using this for the 8,000 lb winch that came off a CJ6.

The Braden pto on my jeep does not have a chain and it is mounted on a D18 TC.

Maybe mine does not have a chain because it is for a rear mounted winch.

I've never heard of the chain breaking on one of these PTO units. You could probably make a case that if something in the transfer case-to pto-to pto driveshaft-to pto winch collection of items were to break, you'd want it to be the chain in the PTO as that would be the easiest and cheapest to fix . . . if the other unit goes bad, your whole transfer case would be affected. In other words, you won't be able to drive home . . .

Keep them lubed with 90wt., and I believe they will outlast you.

The 420 transfer case option sounds like a lot of work. I think you will be time and $$ ahead getting the adpater from Herm, and using the D-18 t case.

I have a Ramsey PTO and winch, no complaints at all.

I run PTO winches and prefer running off the transfer case. It gives you different gearing options as it is basically running off the output of the transmission. Running one off the side of the transmission does not give you this as it is running off of one gear off the cluster gear in the trans. This means unless you have a special reversible pto, you will only have power in, no power out. You will also only have the speed that engine rpm will allow. I've run PTO's for years off the 18 transfer case and never had a problem. Just don't bounce 'em on a rock, let them rust internally, or run out of oil and they will outlast the trans and transfer case. Nickmil.

You may want to double check my math on this but a while back I did some calculations from figures taken from the Ramsey web site for thier model 200 8000 lb PTO winches,

    http://www.ramseypdfs.com/Industrial_SelGuide/MechanicalWinches.pdf

They say 520 in. lb. @ 1000 rpm to the worm gear to run, 750 to start her goin.

If I got it right they only take about 3 1/3 HP to run. The chain shouldn't be a big problem.

There should be a shear pin installed somewheres in the winch drive line, makes sense given the numbers above. You could certainly see that it would be possible to do some searious damage to something without one.

i have talked to Herm about this issue in detail. As far as I am concerned, I agree with his opinion. I mean to say, who knows more about an old jeep, and is more honest than Herm?
If you use the PTO port you are stuck in low.
PTO adapter is a much better way to go. Unless you want to upgrade your electrical system, run dual batteries, install a mega buck alternator, and smell burning wire insulation with a $1,000 electrical winch on a very long pull out in the middle of nowhere.
    just my two cents.
