I found a Dana 30 from a 1987 CJ7 with disc brakes. It has the same gear ratio as my rear axle. Is this a good canidate for swapping in the complete axle? It would give me open knuckles and disc brakes.

If I remember right you're a late 60s CJ 5? If so, that is gonna be too wide. You need to stick to the NT Dana 30s to '81.

The last CJ was produced in '86 and as above the '84-'86 were wide tracks.
IF the axle is an '87, the pumpkin will be on the wrong side (driver's) and have unibearing and no locking hubs.
