About this time last year I bought a 1958 CJ-5, with a 'recently rebuilt' stock engine. I paid $5k for it, as it ran very well, had fresh paint, no rust, and was all around a great little Jeep.

About 6 months ago, driving it around 45 mph, the head gasket blew on it.
Slowly, as I could afford to, I pulled it apart to repair it myself. Upon removing the head, I found there to be a hole about the size of a dime in the 4th cyl (the gasket blew out on the first). Also, I doubt the rebuild was as recent as was said on purchasing.

Well I pulled the thing all apart, replaced the pistons, and got it pieced together. I fired it up for the first time yesterday, only to find the 3rd cyl is missing. I checked the timing order, the plugs, and the wires, all of which are fine. When I had the head resurfaced, my machinist tested the valves in the head (but not the exhaust valves in the block) and said they were fine, and that if they were fine, the exhaust valves should be too (I understand they may not be).

Is there anything else I should be looking for? I am checking the compression tomorrow, but am hoping I am overlooking something. I'd prefer not to un- and re- assemble the top end again.

Check compression, points, cap, rotor, replace plugs, then wires if not solved.
