Nothing new to report so this will mostly be a recap of issues by priority:
Brakes need bled, otherwise they are great.
    Steering needs caster shims. DONE
    Steering box could move forward.
    23" Drag link needs purchased.
3rd gear is basically un-synchronized. WORN OUT
Rear axle, intermediate shaft, overdrive are all howling at different pitches and frequency.
Ignition needs timed but harmonic balancer needs remarked with TDC.

The tail light I painted chrome is definitely catching reflected light better so I'll paint the other side.
Rear side reflectors and corner guards need installed.
    Replace body mounts.
Rework tow bar bracing for a future Rear fuel tank.

    Nope.
It's not a bad list and I have the week off in aug... but we are exhausted, I was working on the jeep each day during lunch. Now I'm on manditory overtime and driving it to work. I'm taking time off to finish the water pump on the car tomorrow. There just isn't any time left for hobbies.

I have a few things on hand and I've got some stuff in the cart but I put quite a bit of jeep fund towards the waterpump, timing kit, tools, a diamond ring, and consumables.

I'm thinking of pulling the 5.38s for 4.27s since the bearings need replaced. Then I can pull the overdrive off. Inspect the transfercase and transmission.

If I can rig up the phone I'll post a video on the road. It's really a symphony of howls.

In the last two weeks I've put about 90 miles on the jeep. 20-25 miles were flat towed behind the Expedition.
This jeep has always been well behaved when flat towed and ok on it's own power but now it's really after the squirrels.
When we bought the jeep in 05 the front springs were immediately replaced with a heavy duty set. The existing springs were broken from years of plow service and we planned to continue working it hard.
My brother put everything together with his typical complaints of stuff being hard and nit fitting right (he would have been 19, I was 15) I believe that with the heavy duty springs on the front, the front the shocks were too short. When I pulled the shocks off this winter the jeep lifted a good inch. Taking the springs down to 7 leaves has settled the jeep about an inch below the shocks max length. The ride is soo much softer and almost comfortable. I believe with the shocks being short they were pulled to there limit and the force of the springs were twisting the axle back and creating some extra caster. Now I've got a pair of 4degree 1.75" wide WFO shims on the way hopefully it will be the best of both worlds.
Once I get the little ford put together I'll give it a few weeks then pull down the axle and put these shims on, I'll also pull the transmission cover and look at the 3rd gear issue. Then I can move the steering box forward and adjust the motor mounts again.

There is a very slow leak around the fuel filter assembly, and the venting needs finished. Ignition timing needs checked.
    Fuel pressure needs checked.
I'm pretty sure the ignition is a little off because it does not like being revved up (popping out the exhaust) I went to check timing today but it ran out of gas right there in the parking lot (I had a gas can)

I'll chug along on the corner guards and little stuff when I can but most will have to wait for the car to be fixed. Then I can pull the jeep apart and have a car with ac and seats for all the kids with 90degree temps on the calendar.

I pulled the top off the t-90 to take a look at it's lack of synchronized 3rd...
I put the cover back on and walked away.

She's just worn out. If I push the syncro assembly to 2nd it's got a lot of space between the gear and blocking ring when they make contact on the taper but pushing forward to 3rd it is against the gear before the taper.
Oil is black but smells like it should. I'll change the oil and put a lot of oil treatment in it.
I've rebuilt this thing three times already and I have a sm465 that just needs adapted.
For the cost of good gears and hard parts it's money ahead to put granny in even though it'll need drive shafts.
The sm465 looks to have been rebuilt with the spacer between gears on the counter shaft and shows minimal wear.
I can limp the t-90 by with a different blocking ring.
We will see what happens. Right now the transmission is the biggest complaint.

I'm used to it and I shift early, It falls into gear with just a little fuss at lower speed. However there is another person who is needs to operate it on an as needed basis who is not used to it...

Long term goal anyway was sm465 with 4.27 axles instead of t-90j overdrive and 5.38 axles.

Here's the sm465. It's really nice inside as of 2018. Looks like someone had a hard time with granny or reverse but otherwise looks great with minimal wear. This transmission came as a spare with an 85 k30 we bought in 05 then this transmission sat since then.

I attended the fall willys reunion. Not a big CJ5 event but we had 4 or 5 in attendance. Four members here including myself, oldtime, fourtrail, and Craig.

We visited "vandyz" offroad park and I put the flex fan into the lower radiator hose (again) on the first obstacle. Better than other years but still a pain in the butt. Rear axle still leaks, heater core is leaking, t-90 is still not happy, exhaust hangers broke, and my my transmission crossmember is squished and the skid plate taco'd.

But... the TBI is amazing, the dual master cyl disk brakes were great, the Saginaw steering needs a little more work but did great. I didn't spend a lot of time at my jeep but did sell a few on the disks and fuel injection.

Here is the hard shell grease taco:
[IMG]20230909_173344 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr

It was not too far from cracking the parking brake...
I was hoping to rebuild my D18 in a d20 case but I think I will need to go to an electric fan and fix the heater first. The rear 44 will need rebuilt with 4.27 gears. I don't want to bother a certain someone with ordering 27/19 spline shafts so I think I'll turn the spindles to have ready then just keep running the tapered shafts till they break.
Naturally the dana 25 needs to fall apart for a matching 4.27 gear swap so it's time for a new list!!!

    Electric radiator fan.
    Stronger motor mounts
Add one leaf to front springs from 7 to 8
remove a few leafs from the rear from 11 to 9
    Heater core.
    Saginaw adjustment.
front shock mounts, spring plates, and shocks
    Family cage
    Sm465.
    New crossmember
    New exhaust
    Driveshaft trims
    Rear axle rebuild
    Front axle rebuild

    Remote vent for the distributor.
    Shorter dipstick assembly.
    Ecm enclosure.
    Better intake.

Lots of this is big picture but hopefully I can get a few items done sooner then later.

I had a seam fail along the driver side drip rail in the freebie soft top. This was a nice indoor job.

So first things first... a little toothpaste on the rear quarter windows where it was loose and rubbing against the rollbar.

    Much better...

Then to fix the seam. The thread itself was deteriorating but the vinyl is ok.

Out came my needle and thread, originally the thread was black. Now it'd faded and I found the tan first, my black thread must be with the seat repair stash.

So I chased all the existing holes working from the outside to the middle. There was a little slack so I could thread all the proper holes in all the layers.

Then I pulled them tight and tied them off.
I'm only half threaded. Now that all the holes are aligned I can run a straight tight thread opposite to what I have. Then I'll need to assess the rest of the top for more repairs.
But it doesn't look bad right now.

ugh, the soft top on my 58 has LOTS of stitches that need to be re-threaded. the fabric is fine, but most of the stitches are compromised. I'm not looking forward to doing that  How time consuming was this? like, a few minutes per inch of stitches? longer?

That 1' section is about 2hrs all together with the little wash in the bathtub. If the threads are still there you can cut and immediately thread with a needle from one side and pass the thread through the otherside the way a sewing machine does it and pull both sides evenly.

Jeff suggested using a machine and long stitches but the top is just too bulky.

considering that mine needs basically all of the stitches replaced, I might bring my sewing machine outside in the carport and do it that way.

Went through aand checked ignition timing.
Retarded it about 2°. It's sort of a cluster to check timing because it has a balancer and timing cover mark that is directly beneath the water pump so I have an aftermarket timing mark and paint stick line zeroed to a best guess of TDC without removing the radiator and fan.

Here are the results, my jeep is still loud but at least it runs a little better.
