Disassembling Dana 25

    I'm trying to replace the front brakes on my Dana 25. The PO upgraded them to 11", I also had a set of Warn locking hubs on there. I have the hubs off, after removing the retaining clip, but I need to remove a big nut, that I guess is called the spindle nut. How does this come off?

    I have seen spindle nut sockets for Dana 44 that are about 2.5" around, with 4 prongs jutting out. The Dana 25 seems to only have one hole. What am I doing wrong? / What tools do I need to do this right? How do you guys change the brakes on a Dana 25?

    Thanks for your help, this kindof stuff for some reason is really frustrating for me.

    Doug, if PO did upgrade to 11", I would think that with easy tapping and wiggling, the drum should pull off seperately, over the wheel and locking hub; have seen very few that were swaged together.
    If they are swaged together, then you will have to pull hub/drum as an assembly. The outer nut should have a tab of a special lockwasher that has been bent over in one area of the nut, to lock that nut and keep it from backing off while driving. Inspect carefully around all outer edges of the nut; when you find it, take a small hammer and chisel and straighten it up (tap it away) so the nut will indeed back off. Both nuts are normal RH thread. Back the outer nut off, remove the large lock washer, remove the inner nut (same size as outer), then the wear washer, then you can pull the whole assy off the spindle. They do make a special socket for that; ours don't have the prongs though.
    All washers and nuts are reusable, unless PO has hacked them up with a chisel.

    Is the nut round on the outside, instead of a hex nut? Do you have lockomatic hubs. If so, clean it off real good and check for a tiny allen head screw in the nut. That screws into a special washer in between the two nuts.

    What I did is tap the first one off, and then using it for a pattern I fired up the welder and created a socket.I know, ya can BUY them. But pluggers build their own tools! -Hill

    If you made your own socket- you going to do just find owning and working on any jeep. My spindle nuts have been massaged loose with a chisel for years by the previous owner. I didn't want to upset my 'ol cj so I just kept up this tradition finally bought new nuts and a socket. I wish I had 11" brakes.
