OK so my 78 year old Father was using the tractor beside the creek and went over the edge. He grabbed the Jeep while I was at work and hooked the winch cable straight to the tractor and "something popped". I can spool the cable, the PTO shaft turns by hand and it will turn the winch when turned by hand. I'm thinking the chain might be broken?

If I take the cover off of the chain drive, what kind of gasket (if any) will I need to put it back? What kind of chain is inside and how to repair or replace?

I've been to Vernco's site to try to educate myself before opening this can of worms.
    Thoughts?

    nickmil In mothballs.

Either the chain popped or one of the keys sheared most likely. The chain is standard industrial chain available at any supplier like Applied Industrial.
Hermtheoverdriveguy.com should have the gasket for the pto as he rebuilds lots of these.

What happens when you engage the pto? If the drive shaft turns then the problem is at the winch and one of the keys. if saft doesn't turn then it would appear to be a pto problem.

Sorry this happened but I'm glad I found the thread. I have the exact same issue. I engaged the PTO not realizing it and it pulled the cable in all the way back throught the cable guide and I heard a snap.

I am not familar enough to know excatly where all the shear pins are for the winch or PTO but this info is very helpful.

The shaft on mine won't turned when engaged but can also rotate by hand.

Are the shear pins visible on the outside of the winch or PTO unit or shaft?

There should be a shear key at every joint; the pto, the u-joints (both ends), and the winch shaft.
