Got two different tilt steering columns from friends for my P/S conversion. Both columns are automatics. One out of a late model chevy, other out of a late model Caddy. I was told I can just remove the shift lever at the top and cut the piece at the bottom? I would really like to use the caddy column because of the telescopic. Thanks again guys.

    I will work just fine.
Only thing to look out for is the neutral safety switch, if the column shift collar moves it might triger the switch. Had this happen and the key wouldn't start the rig, just make sure the collar is locked in place.

I got the caddy steering column in mine. When I cut the piece at the bottom I tack welded it to the column tube, so that the shift collar would not move.

if it doesnt have the button you push to turn the ign off, you may want to remove the lock plate. if the key gets turned off while you are moving and the steering wheel locks, well, that could be a really bad day

You can't really just remove the lock plate as it acts as a retainer to hold the upper end of the column together, BUT you can cut the pin that engages the lock plate. Works good. Just did it on the boss's Wrangler for flat towing purposes.
